IWW and Black Rose call for International Day of Pizza
CHICAGO, IL - Syndicalist union Industrial Workers of the World and anarchist federation Black Rose/Rosa Negra have announced plans for a coordinated general strike and global, federated pizza party including protests in at least 40 cities in 15 countries on May 1st, 2014.
"The general strike and day of action of May 2012 was effectively the last mass action of the Occupy movement," IWW spokeperson Jonathan "Papa John" Haywood explained in a press conference Tuesday, "As syndicalists, we believe what allowed revolutionary action to fizzle out that day was the lack of one big union and one large cheese."
The IWW currently has 10,000 workers in its ranks, a few hundred of which are pizza workers, and the rest a combination of baristas and historical reenactors. Its recent campaigns across the globe include strikes by both Dominos and Pizza Hut delivery drivers. ”During these actions,” Papa John elaborated, “our current pizza workers were able to stockpile enough pizza for the laziest, most gluttonous day of collective work abstention in history. One day, perhaps it will be enough for full pizza communism.”
Though Black Rose is fewer in numbers than the IWW, their fetishization of organization and months spent underground baking pizza instead of engaging the public promises for some of the raddest pizza parties of all, with some of the most complex variations on Robert’s Rules of Ordering a Slice.
The IWW General Headquarters in Chicago have abstained from hosting a pizza party during the May 1st Day of Pizza, citing evidence that there is no real pizza in their city.
